Procopian Toponyms (4): Ταμονβαρί - Σκέμνας
De Aedificiis 4.11.15 (=Haury 146.9-10)
The two names occur, under the title 'Of the Thrace':
Θρᾴκης· Βόσπαρα - Βεσούπαρον - Καπιστούρια - Βηρίπαρα - Ἰσγίπερα - Ὀζόρμη - Βηρηΐαρος - Ταμονβαρί - Σκέμνας - Καράσθυρα - Πίνζος - etc. (Haury 146, 1-12)
I show first that the page containing this string of names must have been dammaged, even more than the average errors in this manuscript. Then I demonstrate that Βηρηΐαρος - initially a variant of Βηρίπαρα (three rows above) - is a marginal note interpolated in the text. Thus, the substring from Ὀζόρμη to Καράσθυρα (from which the interpolation Βηρηΐαρος was removed) corresponds perfectly to the same fragment of the road presented by Itinerarium Burdigalense:
Ὀζόρμη - Ταμονβαρί - Σκέμνας - Καράσθυρα =
mutatio Sernota – mutatio Paramuole – mansio Cillio – mutatio Carassura
Further on, I show that Ταμονβαρί can be very well explained as a deterioration of an original Paramvoli (ItBurd Paramuole). The following Σκέμνας (but Σκελήνας in ms. A) may represent the actual popular pronounciation of an *εἰς Κέλλας [Iskellas or Skellas] (from Kellai, a toponym well attested in that very place), which also explains the feminine, the plural and especially the accusative of the name.
